Why Your Nose Knows More Than the THC Percentage

Tall Flower

For years, cannabis shoppers have been trained to look for one thing: THC percentage. The thinking goes, the higher the number, the better the product.

But that’s not necessarily the case.

THC plays an important role in your experience, but it’s only one piece of the puzzle. If you’ve ever bought the highest-testing flower on the shelf and felt underwhelmed, or fallen in love with a strain that didn’t have the biggest number, you’ve already discovered this for yourself.

Sometimes your nose can tell you more than the label.

Why We Focus on THC

It makes sense. THC is easy to measure, easy to compare, and easy to understand. A strain testing at 30% THC sounds stronger than one testing at 22%.

But cannabis is more complicated than a single number.

The compounds that influence flavor, aroma, and overall experience work together. THC matters, but so do cannabinoids, terpenes, genetics, freshness, and how the flower was grown, cured, and stored.

That’s why two strains with similar THC percentages can feel surprisingly different.

What Your Nose Is Actually Picking Up

That citrusy, fruity, earthy, gassy, piney, or floral smell coming from a jar of flower isn’t just a pleasant bonus.

Those aromas come from terpenes, the naturally occurring compounds found throughout nature. They’re responsible for the scent of lemons, lavender, pine forests, fresh herbs, and yes, cannabis.

Different terpene combinations create different aroma profiles, which is why one strain might smell like sweet berries while another smells like fuel and pepper.

When people find themselves repeatedly drawn to certain aromas, they’re often discovering the types of cannabis they naturally enjoy.

Your Preferences Matter More Than a Number

Think about food. If you hate spicy food, it doesn’t matter how many people tell you the hottest wings in town are the best. Cannabis works similarly.

Some people consistently gravitate toward bright citrus aromas. Others prefer earthy, funky, dessert-like, or gas-forward profiles. Over time, those preferences can become a useful guide when exploring new strains.

Instead of asking, “What’s the highest THC flower you have?” consider asking:

  • What smells similar to strains I’ve enjoyed before?
  • What terpene profile does this strain have?
  • What would you recommend if I like citrus, gas, fruit, or earthy flavors?

You’ll often end up with a better match for your personal preferences.

The Best Cannabis Experience Isn’t Always the Strongest

Some experienced consumers eventually stop chasing THC percentages altogether.

Instead, they look for strains with aromas they enjoy, terpene profiles they recognize, and genetics they’ve had good experiences with in the past.

That’s because the goal isn’t necessarily finding the strongest flower.

It’s finding the flower you’ll actually enjoy.

Follow Your Nose

The next time you’re shopping for cannabis, don’t ignore the THC percentage—but don’t let it make the entire decision for you, either.

Pay attention to the aroma. Notice what catches your attention. Keep track of the strains you enjoy and what they have in common.

You might discover that your favorite cannabis experiences have less to do with a number on a label and more to do with what your nose was telling you all along.

At Elevate, we believe great cannabis is about more than potency. Flavor, aroma, genetics, cultivation, and cure all play a role in creating a memorable experience. THC matters, but it’s only part of the story.
